Signs of Life
Signs of Life is definitely in my top ten lifehouse songs. Im just wondering what your intepretation of the lyrics. Here are the lyrics:
So many people with a good view
If you should ever be the one to hit the ground
There's stop signs on the wrong highway
And it's so dark looking for answers
But your headlights have already gone out
You're looking for a spark
Can April hours spring
Signs of life in me
A heart that's been buried in the ground
Can't break if it's never found
I spent so much time digging that grave
And even if it's pain that I feel
At least I know that it's real
I'd rather be broken than afraid
Can April hours spring
Signs of life in me
It's a long ride don't think it's over
It's a fine line between disaster and a good time
Pick up the pieces and find out who you are
It's a cool sound you know you're hiding
For a meltdown feeling the pressure
Like a landslide you have to figure out why you fell apart
Can April hours spring
Signs of life in me
A heart that's been buried in the ground
Can't break if it's never found
I spent so much time digging that grave
And even if it's pain that I feel
At least I know that it's real
I'd rather be broken than afraid
Can April hours spring
Signs of life in me
Yeah, oh
Just slow down and take it in stride, yeah
There's no deadlines as long as you're alive, yeah
Alive, yeah
Alive, yeah
Just slow down and take it in stride, yeah
There's no deadlines as long as you're alive, yeah
Alive, yeah
Just slow down and take it in stride, yeah
There's no deadlines as long as you're alive, yeah
Alive, yeah
I love this song too!! i can't stop crying with this song and idk why
My interpretation is...idk how to describe it...to me this is one of the more personal songs. it's saying how you're in pain, and looking for life, but you feel you're in a grave you dug yourself and you feel lost...and then it goes on to say you're alright, just slow down and take it in stride. You have your whole lifetime to figure things out
Or maybe it's saying how you like buried your heart so you didn't have to feel anything but pain, pain is better than feeling nothing or feeling afraid. You're just waiting and looking for something to make it better, for signs of life
There's just so many interpretations for this one. So beautiful <3
Signs of Life makes me cry aswell ![]()
I love your interpretation! I feel that this song is very deep and your right it has many intepratations. Thats the best thing about all Jay songs he can write them to form many intepratations like the song Broken which has three main meanings that many people can relate to ![]()

it doesn't really matter who wrote this song, what is the meaning of this, it's about how u feel when u hear it! it's a perfect song...
My intepretation of this song:
Someone ( a boy, a girl, mother... or sth like that) is looking for life, cuz they feel lost, they need to find signs to feel alive!!
haha i'm crying now!
You going to make me cry lol
don't worry we are crying too lol
*hands out tissues* It's okay everybody. Must be a song that a lot of people can relate to. I know I can. ![]()

It's a really pretty song. It reminds me of the message of Easter / Spring which is about renewal of life after the death / destruction that winter brings. The most memorable line for me that I base that on is, "Can April hours spring signs of life in me?" That's the hopeful part.
However, the beginning of the song to me is awfully dark and depressing. These are lyrics about someone reflecting on their past and feeling that they are in a real desperate and hopeless feeling situation. Sounds like the past is catching up to the present and there is a lot of guilty feelings, "fine line between disaster and a good time." Maybe some of those good times became things that are now regretted deeply after the "party" is over. And maybe some of these feelings were "buried" in that person as if hoping the pain would go away if it was just swallowed and not talked about and not faced. Seems like it's saying that even though they know the right thing to do, it's so painfully hard to face that it's easier to hide, but yet you may have to admit that you're not perfect (i.e., broken) in order to face those fears and begin to forgive yourself and others and truly "spring" to life again.
Wow...the way Jason writes it is so poetic though and the melody makes it so beautiful.
*takes tissue* thankyou lol
Good interpretations, guys! ![]()
Okay, so this is how I understand the song:
Signs of Life is such a heartfelt song. For me it's about feeling DEAD inside. Probably because of something tragic that had happened like a loss of a loved one or something. You felt like there was no reason to live anymore. You were hurt so bad that you just can't let go. You've sort of chose to become numb so that you won't feel the pain. Like your "heart has been burried in the ground." Yet, you were asking yourself, "Can April hours spring signs of life in me?" In the end, you realized that hey, you're not a robot. You're human. You have feelings. You get hurt. You cry. It's okay. You're alive. These are the signs of life.
Move on, "slow down and take it in stride. There's no deadlines as long as you're alive."
*sigh* Beautiful song. ![]()
Wow, Jonah!
Nice. Gosh, it's so complex. I think that's part of the reason I like Lifehouse music so much is that it doesn't oversimplify everything. *gets out tissues again* lol ![]()

Its about Jason's father. Like lot of his songs.
"so many people with a good view if you should ever be the one to hit the ground" meaning how the fans mostl know about his father and if things go wrong, everyone can see it it wont be a secret,
the most meaning full part of the song is the chorus
" a heart thats been buried in the ground cant break if its ever found... i spent so much time digging that grave" that line has such n impact, and it hits like a ton of bricks. the first part is just saying about how he is so guarded by now, he doesnt want to put his heart out there because hiding it has kept it unbroken since he buried it. and it took him so long and it was so hard to bury is heart.
the bridge. "just slow down, take in in stride, theres no deadlines as long as youre alive"
that hits with almost as much power a the chorus... like after all this pain. he finaly stops to breathe. like ok, maybe its not out of the question. i know i love you... im just so hurt. lets just take in stride.
sitting here explaining the song has given it more power to me than i thought.
thanks for the explanation Nickyjames! I never thought of it like that.... wow...
That makes sense Nickyjames. Thank you for writing that down. It gives me a whole new perspective of that song.
I was just reading the lyrics again and wondering.....can you imagine what a song like that might mean to someone who had just had a tragic loss of a child or a miscarriage or something tragic like that? If a female vocalist sang this, it might lend itself more to that sort of interpretation, but even still, the terminology of "signs of life" for a woman could mean something different than what it might mean figuratively for a man. IDK....just throwing that out there because it's really interesting how many different interpretations a person could have from one song.
That is a dangerous road to travel for a woman with no answers to why she miscarried. It's simply something that time has to heal and the heart that is buried can to easily find its way out of the ground when she least expects it. I do think it is comforting to hear those words, "there are no deadlines as long as your alive". For the woman suffering this kind of loss there really is no end. It doesn't mean that you never experience happiness, it is simply a cross you bare.
I am Alive and I'm enjoying the LIFE around me. And it took many"April hours to spring Signs of Life in me". And Lifehouse Hours. ![]()
This is an amazing thread for an amazing song. Thank you Lifehouse for such a beautiful song. ![]()
thanks for the prop guys. I think all the fans should know what all the songs are about. but its up to Jason to say it. I just think this one needs to be known.
